TV Grim Reaper will bring plenty of bad news for TV show fans this season, but his first predictions of the new season are always good news!

SEAL Team and SWAT are certain to be renewed for a season four in 2020-21

The Fourth Season Guarantee of The Renewal Gods
All shows produced by a network’s own studio in the past twelve seasons that finished their third seasons with at least 66 episodes have been renewed for a fourth season.

SEAL Team, and SWAT should finish their third seasons with 66 or more episodes, and both are produced by their network’s in-house studio.

The CW’s Dynasty also falls into this category, as well as the next, and so is doubly certain to be renewed! Its quest for The Blutarsky 0.0 rating continues!

All Non-Rookie CW Shows Not Already Canceled Are Certain To Be Renewed

The CW hasn’t canceled a non-rookie show without announcing a final season at the same time (aka, “renanceling”) since Hart Of Dixie in Spring, 2015.

This is likely because the deal with Netflix for shows that premiered through the 2018-19 season includes how many episodes Netflix will pay for, which then determines how many will be produced. CW has made it their standard operating procedure  to announce a cancellation at the same time as the final season renewal. Given that, the non-rookie cancellations this season (Arrow, Supernatural) are already known, and the rest of the non-rookie shows are certain renewals.

The new CW shows premiering this season and beyond, including Batwoman and Nancy Drew, are the first shows to not be part of the earlier Netflix deal. Those two will go to HBO Max and CBS All Access respectively. How this changes the renewal decisions for those shows remains to be seen. Stay tuned.

What about the rest of the 3rd season shows?

Shows That Will Finish Season 3 With Fewer than 66 Episodes

Station 19 (27 episodes after s2), The Good Doctor (36), Good Girls (23) finished their second seasons with fewer than 44 episodes and so will have fewer than 66 episodes at the end of their third seasons.

The predictions for each will still lean towards likely renewal regardless of ratings because cancellations among such “fewer than 66 episodes after s3” shows are rare, but not unheard of.

Third Party Productions

The Resident (produced by Disney’s 20th Fox Studios) is both produced by a third party and, with only 37 episodes after season two, will not reach 66 episodes at the end of season three. Its prediction will also lean towards likely renewal regardless of ratings since history has shown that producers are motivated to do whatever possible to generate a fourth season of episodes.

Recapping the renewals and cancellations already known before the start of the season.

  • Grey’s Anatomy, Mom, Young Sheldon, The Simpsons and This is Us have already been renewed for the 2020-21 season.
  • Modern Family, How To Get Away With Murder, Madam Secretary, Criminal Minds, Arrow, Supernatural, Empire, Blindspot, Will & Grace and The Good Place have been canceled and will end after the 2019-20 season.

Week 1 predictions cover only shows with special circumstances. Starting next week, predictions will expand to cover every show that has premiered this season.
