Person Of Interest😳

The reaper’s sure that no network exec has generated more false hope with an offhand remark than CBS CEO Les Moonves did last week.

What he is reported to have said to financial analysts:

“We have about five new shows on this year,” he says. “Of those five, I believe all five of them will be renewed, and we own four of them.”

Of course this was breathlessly reported as Moonves guaranteeing renewal for all new CBS shows notwithstanding the fact that:

  • CBS has already canceled one new show: Angel From Hell
  • CBS has 7 (not 5) new shows this season: Angel from Hell, Code Black, Limitless, Supergirl, Life In Pieces, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Rush Hour.
  • CBS owns 4 of the new shows, but only 3 have premiered so far: Angel from Hell, Code Black (w/ ABC), Limitless. Not yet premiered: Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (w/ABC).
  • His language was typically #PRJedi vague

While the reaper always counsels ignoring everything that network execs say in public as irrelevant, his best guess is that pressed into a remark by financial analysts Moonves went off the cuff with something he thought both positive and vague. That it’s being uncritically reported as guaranteed renewal gospel by the idiot TV media is just par for the course.

After the CW renewed all the shows on their air, the reaper has called into question the “lack of a full season order means cancellation” rule. Given that, he’s moved his prediction for Code Black to “toss up”.

In other news, recent Limitless ratings have put it into the “toss up” range as well.

The reaper’s running tally on CBS shows this season:

Right: Mike & Molly, The Good Wife, NCIS

Wrong:

Push: (renewed or canceled while a toss up): Angel From Hell

The Reaper Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
